MSRDP COMPLIANCE AND ETHICS COMMITTEE GUIDELINES
Professional Courtesy Discounts
04/30/02Each department/division shall develop policies regarding professional courtesy discounts that comply with applicable laws, regulations, contracts, and this institution’s professional courtesy discount policy.
Individual treating physicians may, following their department policy, grant a full 100% professional courtesy discount for any professional service performed. Such discounts must be determined prior to, or at the time service is provided. A billing statement will be generated documenting the professional service which is being discounted. The physician will indicate on the billing sheet. “Professional Courtesy Discount - No charge.” No retroactive professional courtesy discounting will be allowed. Recipients of professional discounts will be limited to physicians, medical students, and their immediate family members. There will be no other professional courtesy discounts given. (i.e. no partial discounts, insurance only, etc.) There will be no professional courtesy discounts for supplies, medications, equipment, etc., for which the Plan has to pay. Care must be taken to insure that a discount could not be construed to be an inducement to generate referrals. Central UT Medicine billing office will use a specific code for entering these discounts into the system for tracking and reporting purposes.
